You are standing on the old Hertford Road at the bottom of what used to be a high hill. On this terrace of houses you can see the remains of a sign that once welcomed visitors to Welwyn. The sign was painted over at the start of WWII to confuse any invading Germans!

From 1720 to 1906, this was the main road to Hertford. But in 1906 the owner of Lockleys, the mansion that now houses Sharradswood School, decided to move the road away from his estate.
