St. Mary the Virgin Church anchors the northern end of the village. There has been a house of worship on this site since at least the 12th century. Bits of that early church remain, but most of the current building dates to the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The earliest records of a church in Welwyn date from 1190, but Saxon burials found nearby indicate that the church was here well before that time. Although the building you see now has some early elements, most of what is visible dates to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
