One afternoon, local archaeologist Tony Rook decided to take a walk along a stream and look for Roman artefacts. What he found were Roman roof tiles eroding out of the bank, which led to the eventual excavation of parts of a Roman villa, including these baths. When the motorway was constructed, Tony and his team fought to save the site, raising funds to create a vault over the baths and keep them accessible. Today, the baths are run by the Welwyn Hatfield Museum Service and are open to the public.
