The Transport for London Oyster card is based on MIFARE technology. MIFARE is the NXP Semiconductors-owned trademark of a series of chips widely used in contactless smart cards. The MIFARE name covers proprietary technologies based upon various level of the ISO/IEC 14443 Type A 13.56 MHz contactless smart card standard.
Transport for London is currently migrating from MIFARE Classic to MIFARE DESFire EV1 cards
The ISO/IEC 14443 standard has been embraced by the NFC Forum. Therefore my Oyster card can be detected by NFC-enabled phones such as the Nexus S.
