The Glen by Helen Glassford, 1998

Glassford graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in 1998 and completed the MFA postgraduate course in 2002. Originally from Cumbria, she is now based in north Fife.

According to Glassford’s website, her “paintings are abstractions of the Scottish landscape. Her painting is in a constant state of flux, a condition perpetuated by her experience of the shifting weather systems that roll inexorably across this landscape, as a counterpoint to the slow creep of geological time. Glassford reacts freely to the immensity of nature before her, attempting both to capture the spirit of place, and humanity’s transient experience of it.”

Glassford has exhibited her work widely throughout the UK and has won a number of awards including the Sir Robin Phillipson Memorial Medal at the RSA, the Cuthbert New Young Artist award and the prestigious Armour Award at the Royal Glasgow Institute.
