Born in Newburgh, Boyd was educated in Perth and graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College in 1968, completing a postgraduate diploma the following year. After several years living in London, he moved to the Forest of Dean in 1981 and has taught and painted there ever since.
Boyd’s student work is entirely different in style, featuring highly expressionistic portraits. In this example the so-called Sultan (a pun on sultana?) appears to be made out of fruit.

This painting was acquired for the Duncan of Jordanstone College Collection in 1969.
