This is one of a number of paintings created by Gray depicting surreal, nightmarish cities and landscapes. His work at this time revealed a grand, poetic vision inspired by artists such as Bruegel and Bosch.
Born in Kinghorn, Fife in 1947, Gray studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee and the Royal College of Art in London. Disenchanted with the art world of the time, Gray gave up painting and became a factory worker.
In 1985 he took up art once again, and has since moved back to his native Kinghorn, where he paints and prints local landscape scenes.
