Needles for mending fishing nets, made of wood or bone.
Images of net mending.
Until the 1940s nets were mended with needles made of bone or wood. Later, both nets and needles were made from synthetic materials. Nets suffer a lot of damage during use. They represented a large financial outlay for the fishermen. It was vital to check them regularly and repair any damage.
