The Singer factory in Clydebank first opened its doors in 1884. By 1943 the workforce had produced over 36 million sewing machines. The factory continued to produce sewing machines right up until its closure in 1980.

David remembers getting off at the Singer train station when the factory was still in operation. Both David's mum and aunt worked at the factory and owned a Singer themselves.
