Before the days of washing machines wringers or mangles could be found attached to kitchen sinks (“jaw boxes”) or in wash houses to help to drain excess water off clothes. Electric wringers were invented in the 1940s.
Washing was an important part of a woman’s daily routine which is outlined in this educational film clip from the 1950s. This film was made for a school to train girls in domestic science and features other household chores such as cooking, setting the table and looking after babies.
