A mechanical device to compute a closed area by following its contour.
This is a precision mechanical integrator made by OTT in Kempten, Germany, in ~1950. It is used to compute the magnitude of a closed area by following its border with a stylus; two wheels rotate during this movement and their index can be used to compute the area. The picture shows the device computing the work done by a thermal engine using its (pressure, volume) diagram.
